Professional Development: Does PR Have a PR problem?: The current state and how to improve it

When ? Wednesday, May 25th 2011, from 11:30am to 1:30pm (*a light lunch will be served)

Where ? Sheraton Ottawa Hotel, 150 Albert Street, O’Connor Room

Cost ? CPRS Student Members $35

CPRS & IABC Members $45

Non-Members $60

About the presentation:
In recent years, we’ve seen a fundamental shift in the public relations and communications industry. The inevitable integration of web 2.0, followed by the greater demand for creative multimedia assets, has brought industry professionals to develop new skill sets and reinforce old ones. Today, we attempt to evaluate the current state of the PR industry, in the hopes to draw new parallels that will lead the National Capital Region’s professionals with a fresh perspective for years to come.

The session will feature brief presentations from our three panel members, before they address three key questions:
1. What is the state of the profession in terms of its image and how well it is understood or misunderstood?
2. How did we get here? What is it about the work we do and the way we work that leads to the kind of understanding and image we have?
3. How do we fix it? If we agree that PR should be better understood and more valued, how can we achieve that?

The panel will then open the floor for questions.

Join us on Wednesday May 25th for the chapter’s last professional development event of the 2010/2011 season!

Moderated by: CPRS Ottawa/Gatineau

Following two fascinating missions to Niger (West Africa), she became PRWB’s executive director. PRWB’s first international project is carried out in partnership with the NGO Oxfam-Québec. PRWB works with Oxfam-Québec’s offices in Niger and Burkina Faso, and their African partners, on a gender-based violence project. Deanna will talk about her work, and that of her two successors, with a 24-member group of Nigerian associations, including five government departments – all working together to fight violence against women and children in this primarily Muslim and polygamist country. Deanna will share her joys and frustrations and what she and PRWB is learning about how public relations theory and best practices can be applied to a challenging problem in one of the poorest countries in the world.

About Deanna Drendel:

Deanna has 30 years of public relations and marketing communications experience acquired in PR firms and private and public sector companies. For the past 11 years, she heads up Deanna Drendel Communications with a clientele in the energy, technology and healthcare sectors. She created and was editor-in-chief of the PR magazine insert published in InfoPresse magazine. She sat on the founding board that created the Conseil de l’industrie des communications du Québec. The SQPRP recognized Deanna’s contributions this year by presenting her with the Yves St-Amand award.
